Ssard is an Ice Warrior from an early period of Martian history, encountered in the year 3998, and the first of his race to join the Doctor in his travels. When he met the Eighth Doctor, he was a guard at the Ascendance Rite of Izaxyrl and he later became a companion.
Character Description
Ssard, along with Ristaal and Tustokk confronted the Doctor and Stacy Townsend when they found them at the High Lord Uzoxx's son's (Izaxyrl) ritual, but left them unharmed. He then fought with other Ice Warriors, led by Lord Artix, and was the only survivor, as Izaxyrl was kidnapped, so it was up to Ssard to inform the Uzoxx what had happened to his son. Ssard went with the Doctor and Stacy to try and rescue Izaxyrl and he had suspected that Artix had a spy in the palace, and was right. He was captured by Artix along with Stacy and it was up to the Doctor to rescue him (RT:Descendance). Ssard was chained up but heard who the spy was at the palace and was eventually rescued by the Doctor. At the end he was invited on a 'holiday' by the Doctor and gladly accepted the offer to travel with him. (RT:Ascendance)
He wasn't very pleased in Victorian London and had to wear a cloak to hide his alien features. He was a good engineer as he helped to fix P'fer'd's spaceship and earlier he piloted an Ice Warrior ship so he is familiar with futuristic technology (RT:Perceptions, Descendance). He, unlike the Doctor, doesn't notice when Stacy has been swapped with a shapeshifter (RT:Coda). Later, after Stacy and him have left the Doctor, they get married and the Doctor is invited to the wedding. (EDA:Placebo Effect)
