Doctor Who visual effects designers were only credited during the 1963 run of the series. There is some hesitancy in placing them within the visual effects department, despite their title, because most of what they were doing would be considered special effects by the BBC Wales production. Until roughly the Seventh Doctor's era, their effects largely happened during principal photography and were therefore realised in-camera, something which, in the 21st century is practically definitional to the "special effect". Nevertheless, because they would have been responsible for a few things realised in post-production in the late 1980s, and because the title is historically appropriate, we place this category within the visual effects department.
