A New Year Special is a (currently) rare special episode in the Doctor Who series which typically airs on the 1 January of the year following a season/series of the show.
As of yet, two episodes are New Year Specials.
Showrunner Chris Chibnall made the decision to cut the yearly tradition of the Christmas Special, which had been ongoing since the relaunch in 2005, in favour of this special.
