Mawdryn was the leader of a group of scientists that tried to discover the Time Lords' secret of regeneration. He was subsequently cursed with unwilling eternal regeneration.
Profile
Mawdryn's followers stole a metamorphic symbiosis regenerator and used it on themselves, only to find that their immortality was one of unending mutation and regeneration. They were exiled from their world and their spaceship entered a warp ellipse.
Three thousand years later, Mawdryn was transmatted from the ship into the TARDIS. After regenerating, Mawdryn posed as the Doctor in order to fool Nyssa and Tegan while the real Doctor, meanwhile, ended up on 1977 Earth near the site of the ship's transmat landing point.
