Dudgeon was a Captain in the First World War. In 1917, Sergeant Wood showed him round Charnage Hospital. He had a shrapnel wound in his hip. He told Ace that he thought he was a coward. He was the only survivor of the Battle of Mons. He was knocked unconscious. He said that he saw an angel. He questioned which side God was on. The British Army asked him to investigate Brook.
