Torcaldians were the natives of Torcaldi. They were hermaphrodites. Because they could each play the role of mother or father, in producing offspring, Torcaldians did not pay very much attention to gender or its assignment. They were confused about humans "specialis[ing] in one or the other".
A rift in time, known as Torcaldi's Bane, was draining the life force of the Torcaldians. The First Doctor helped to repair their computers, allowing them to live normal lifespans. (PROSE: The Ruins of Time)
