Unit production manager is a North American credit, more similar to the role of line producer than that of UK unit managers.
Hired by the producer during pre-production, the unit production manager oversees shooting schedules and below the line budget, through to the end of principal photography.
They work with the producer to keep production within budget and on time, and with the location manager to survey and secure filming locations. Unit production managers even take part in the hiring of below the line staff, as well as in approving salaries and financial expenses.
To date[update], Robert D. Nellans has been the only credited unit production manager, for Torchwood.
