The Doctor was a female incarnation of the Doctor after her previous incarnation committed suicide and changed gender in order to hide from the Time Lords. She arrived on Earth and abandoned her TARDIS in order to affectively hide from the Time Lords.
She lived on Earth for a period of time and worked in Sainburys, while spending her free time drinking copious amounts. During some of her alcohol fueled binges she was able to communicate with her previous (male) incarnation.
Capture and escape
Two Time Lords were sent to capture and return the Doctor to Gallifrey to finish her sentence; which had originally been intended to be exile on Earth. As a consequence of her escape the Time Lords have her an ultimatum her sentence was to be confined to her TARDIS for the rest of her life and if she attempted to escape the the TARDIS would dematerialise forever and it would be as though she never existed.
When the Doctor entered the TARDIS intending to begin her confinement she found a note from one of the Time Lords claiming to sympathise with her plight. As she sets the controls and begins to dematerialise the TARDIS she began to wonder if the letter was telling the truth. (DWU: Exile)
