"Vlad" was the name given to a Mongolian soldier in the Red Army during the Second World War. He did not speak much and his real name was unknown, so his comrades simply called him "Vlad".

Vlad fought under Captain Yazov's command during the Soviets' bid to capture the German capital city of Berlin. On 25 April 1945, he and his team fought through the contested streets and discovered seven dead Tibetans in German uniforms in a basement. When the others mistook them for Chinese or Japanese troops, Vlad made a rare case of speaking out and informed them they were "men of Tibet". (PROSE: The Shadow in the Glass)
