Saving Private Ryan was a film about World War II that included the events of D-Day. Flip Ramon had seen the film when she arrived in France in 1944 with the Sixth Doctor and Constance Clarke. She asked if the time they were visiting was before or after Saving Private Ryan. It turned out they had arrived a few weeks after, at a time when France was being liberated from Nazi occupation.
