Mariama was the son of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and Mariatu. He was born in 1956 in Sierra Leone, and as a boy returned to his mother's village with her a year after the country gained independence. Mariama grew up hearing stories about his father, and never really bonded with his step-father, Kandeh. He had a half-sister, Aminuta. In 1963 he finally bonded with his step-father over a game of football, oblivious to the fact that really it was Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart inhabiting Kandeh's body, having been astral projected back in time from 2011. The son of the Brigadier and Mariatu was not named in the novel, but the name appears in the early draft of The Also People. (REF: A History of the Universe, AHistory) Mariama is later named in-universe in PROSE: Lucy Wilson and the Bledoe Cadets.
