The Parthenon was a temple found in Athens, Greece. The Doctor visited the site at some point during its construction, and expressed in his sixth incarnation that he always meant to pop back and see it again, now it was finished. (AUDIO: The Spectre of Lanyon Moor)
Various members of the Slitheen family attempted to destroy the Parthenon in 1500 BC, but were stopped by the Tenth Doctor and June. (PROSE: The Slitheen Excursion)
Appearance
Because it was created before the invention of the load-bearing arch, the Parthenon had many close together pillars to hold up its roof. Above these pillars was a collection of many colourful sculptures, which included statues of horses marching in parade. (PROSE: The Slitheen Excursion)
History
Prior to or during their sixth incarnation, the Doctor visited the Parthenon while it was being built. (AUDIO: The Spectre of Lanyon Moor)
Not long after its construction, the Slitheen family attempted to destroy the Parthenon, but they were prevented from doing so by the Tenth Doctor. Later, in 1687, an explosion of gunpowder destroyed the roof. Many of the sculptures which were found above the columns were taken and put into various museums. At some point, the Parthenon itself became a museum. (PROSE: The Slitheen Excursion)
At some point prior to 1921, the Elgin Marbles were removed from the Parthenon by Thomas Bruce, and taken to the British Museum. (AUDIO: A Life in the Day)
Mrs Moynihan planned to visit the Parthenon in 2000, though her trip to Athens was secretly to pick up Sancreda's missing power source, a psionic amplifier, which was in an Athens museum at the time. (AUDIO: The Spectre of Lanyon Moor)
