Allan Quatermain was an explorer, and friend of Henry Rider Haggard. He allowed for stories from his life to be expanded on by the author. He became central character in Haggard's novels. (PROSE: The Three Faces of Helena)

Quatermain first met Iris Wildthyme at a dinner party in London, 1870, after he returned from Africa with the Holy Flower. (PROSE: Her and Allan)

The Fifth Doctor used one of Haggard's novels as research when he visited the Transvaal in 1877. When he met Haggard, he told him something of Allan Quatermain. (PROSE: White Man's Burden)

Quatermain was hired by Helena to escort her to the legendary city of Kurr. (PROSE: The Three Faces of Helena)
