"Br'er Rabbit and the Tar-Baby" was a story.
In the story, Br'er Fox captured Br'er Rabbit by using the Tar Baby, a glistening child made of tar. Br'er Rabbit fought the Tar Baby and became more and more glued to his opponent with every blow. Br'er Rabbit begged Br'er Fox for anything except to be thrown somewhere until the fox did so, which was exactly what the rabbit wanted, and so he escaped.
The Seventh Doctor referenced the story when he tricked Ishtar into thinking that the life support systems in the the Doctor's TARDIS were controlled from the secondary console room, thus trapping her there. However, Ace was unfamiliar with the story. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Genesys)
Thomas Edward Hawthorne's mother told him the story when he was little. It both fascinated him and terrified him, and he associated the sightless, dripping black baby with his fear of outsiders. In 1968, he was killed by the Sentience in the form of the Tar Baby. (PROSE: Nightshade)
On Albert, the Eighth Doctor told Alex Volpe and Inex the story of the Tar Baby and Brer Rabbit, which Inex found hilarious. (PROSE: Grimm Reality)
Danny Wilkinson's mother told him the story when he was little. It had given him nightmares for weeks afterwards. He remembered the story when he was being pulled to his death into the pavement. (PROSE: The House That Jack Built)
Claude Lapin tried to tell the tar baby story to Story, who had already heard it many times before. (PROSE: Born Among Briars)
