Shangri-La was a holiday camp in south Wales overseen by Burton.

Layout

Typical Holiday camp of its time. Various facilities such as a Ball Room, Canteen, Gardens, PA system and various accommodation and Chalets. Themed colour was yellow, as used on buildings and staff uniforms.

History

In 1959, the Seventh Doctor and Melanie Bush ended up there after winning a trip with Nostalgia Tours. The time-travelling bus they were on collided with the first American space satellite in Earth orbit. The bus crashed at Shangri-La instead of Disneyland, as intended. The last Chimeron, Delta, was also onboard, and the Bannermen were pursuing her.

Thanks to the informer, Keillor, the Bannermen located Shangri-la and landed. They attacked the camp but were sent into disarray by the Chimeron princess' singing amplified by a speaker. They were tied up and taken away. (TV: Delta and the Bannermen)

By 1967, the Shangri-La Hotel, as it was then known, was in bad condition. When Jack Harkness and Michael Bellini were trying to hide out, they decided to stay there. (PROSE: Trace Memory)

In his investigation of reports of a series of agent provocateurs known as "the Doctor" who have been involved in unusual incidents, the journalist James Stevens found evidence of the Doctor and Mel's presence in Shangri-La during this incident. The records indicated that the Doctor was "a short, quirkily dressed man, with a slight Scottish accent and immense intelligence." He noted that this was the same Doctor who was involved in the ULTIMA Incident at Maiden's Point in 1943 and the Shoreditch Incident in November 1963 but, on those occasions, he was accompanied by a teenage girl named Ace and that neither of them seemed to have aged in the intervening 20 years. Behind the scenes

Majestic Holiday Camp on Barry Island, South Glamorgan, Wales served as the filming location for Shangri-La. The camp no longer exists, but Barry Island was the filming location for parts of the 2005 episodes The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances.

The two tigers seen on the front lawn of the camp are Esso Tigers, produced by International Fiberglass.
