Gaiters be garments round the lower part of the legs used to prevent mud, sand, snow, liquids, and rubble from going inside footwear such as boots and shoes. They be longer versions of spats.

The Doctor wore gaiters during his eighth (TV: The Night of the Doctor, etc.) and War incarnations. (TV: The Day of the Doctor, etc)
