Kylie Minogue was a singer. The Doctor once quoted from Minogue's song "Never Too Late." (DW: The Idiot's Lantern).

Behind the scenes

Minogue was born in 1968, and is an Australian singer and actress. Her initial taste of fame came from the soap opera, Neighbours — a hit throughout large swaths of the English-speaking world. Minogue parlayed this fame into an even more successful musical career, although she still continued to make occasional acting appearances. In 2005, Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer, but within a year was performing again.

Kylie Minogue co-starred in DW: Voyage of the Damned, which aired on Christmas Day 2007 and in which she plays the Tenth Doctors temporary companion Astrid Peth. This makes her one of the only individuals to appear in the series after having been directly referenced by the show (in The Idiot's Lantern). The announcement of her casting in the special came shortly after her return to performance after her battle with breast cancer.

Minogue's performing career dates back to the mid-1980s when she rose to popularity as an actress on Australian TV. She scaled back her film and TV appearances after launching her successful music career in the late 1980s, but has appeared in several films including Moulin Rouge and Bio-Dome.

Minogue has been photographed with a copy of the BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures novel Camera Obscura. This, plus her use of Cyberman imagery in her stage show, have led to Doctor Who fans speculating that she enjoys the series. She has recently stated in an interview that they are correct, she is indeed a fan [1]

Minogue was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Prince Charles only a couple of days before archived footage of her Doctor Who character, Astrid. made an appearance in Journey's End.

The somewhat ethereal nature of Astrid's fate has led to speculation of a future return appearance by Minogue; as of Summer 2009 no such announcement has been made.
