Vampires of Venice[1] is the name of the sixth episode of Series 5 to be aired sometime in Spring 2010. Some sources identify the title as Vampires in Venice, but BBC publicity and the episode's author are not using this title.

Synopsis

In Venice, even danger is beautiful. The House of Calvierri has the whole city under its protection, but something is very wrong. There are blood-drained corpses in the street, something lurks in the canal, and the Calvierri girls are the loveliest in town, except when you glance in the mirror...[2]

Filming Locations

  • Croatia was used as the primary location for the setting of this episode. It is the third episode of the revival series after DW: The Fires of Pompeii and Planet of the Dead to include major filming outside the UK.
  • Some filming took place in Caephilly Castle [8]
  • Scenes featuring The Doctor, Amy and Rory were filmed at Llancaiach Fawr [9]

Rumours

  • An apparent excerpt of the script has been leaked online, which suggests Rory may be a second companion. This could be compared with Mickey Smith's role in Series 2 when he travelled in time with The Doctor. (DW: The Girl in the Fireplace; Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel). [10]
  • It is believed The Doctor will use a gondola in this episode [11]
  • Toby Whithouse told SFX "At one point the Doctor says the word ‘diabetic’. One character is a talking otter. There is an almost painfully beautiful gag about cheese and biscuits. One of those isn't true." And the Doctor won't say "Geronimo." [12]
