Peter Bennett was a renowned astronaut and geologist. Mia Bennett was his daughter.
Mia's mother died shortly after 2032, and Peter Bennett relinquished his space exploration to stay on Earth and bring Mia up. She was facinated by her father's work and often accompanied him on research trips.
After Mia graduated Stanford, she joined her father in his research of planetary geology. The Bennetts were able to grow plants such as asparagus, green beans and turnips in Martian soil. (TV: The Waters of Mars)
