The Wizard of Oz was a film adapted from the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum. (AUDIO: A Thousand Tiny Wings) The film premiered in Hollywood at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on 15 August 1939. (PROSE: The Wonderful Doctor of Oz)
The story involved a protagonist named Dorothy, (AUDIO: The Settling) She and her house were taken from Kansas to the Land of Oz by a tornado. (PROSE: Normality, Dead Romance) This was a "magic technicolor kingdom". (PROSE: At Childhood's End) The house landed on a witch on its arrival, prompting celebration. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen) Other scenes involved a Cowardly Lion, (PROSE: Who Discovered America?) and a Scarecrow who was attacked by flying monkeys in the course of the narrative. (PROSE: Grimm Reality) Yasmin Khan remembered being scared by bits of it, including a scene in which Dorothy was attacked by a tree. She also remembered flying monkeys and the ruby shoes. (PROSE: The Wonderful Doctor of Oz) "The Wizard of Oz" was also a character in the story. (TV: The Curse of Fatal Death)
In 1002, Susan Foreman said to Barbara Wright that Eric the Red, who was afraid he and his longship would go over the edge of the world, reminded her of the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz. The two then burst into the song-and-dance routine from the film. (PROSE: Who Discovered America?)
Ace was named after the main character, Dorothy, because her mother Audrey was a fan of The Wizard of Oz. The Seventh Doctor was also a fan. (AUDIO: The Settling) Audrey's mother Kathleen loved the film as well, as it took her away from all her miseries. (PROSE: Love and War)
Fitz Kreiner had seen The Wizard of Oz when he was a kid and it had terrified him, especially the scene in which the flying monkeys attacked the Scarecrow. (PROSE: Grimm Reality) A young Ruby Duvall had similar experiences the day her father got hit and paralysed by Michael Brack's motorbike. (PROSE: Iceberg)
When the TARDIS appeared to kill Alid Jag by materialising on top of him and crushing him, the Eighth Doctor compared it to Dorothy's house killing the witch in The Wizard of Oz, except that no one seemed pleased at all by the occurrence. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)
Christine Summerfield referenced this film by describing the difference between her bottle universe and the real one as the difference between monochrome Kansas and technicolor Oz. (PROSE: Dead Romance)
The Eighth Doctor, annoyed with Calamee Fischer asking him where he was from, said he was from, among other places, the Land of Oz. (PROSE: Halflife)
Upon encountering the eye of the storm, the Eleventh Doctor contemplated whether this was what Dorothy had felt like. He noted that he should ask her the next time he saw her. (GAME: The Eternity Clock)
Jesus Delporto thought the inside of the Bridge between Belial and Moloch looked like "something out of the Wizard of Oz". (PROSE: Lucifer Rising)
Clara Oswald couldn't understand where the phrase "safe as houses" came from when houses could, among other things, be taken to Oz by tornadoes. (PROSE: Normality)
Cosplayers dressed as Scarecrow and Glinda the Good Witch of the North at San Diego Comic-Con. (COMIC: Selfie)
A phrase from the film — "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" — was quoted many times by the Doctor's companions and friends. (PROSE: Matrix, Vanderdeken's Children, Relative Dementias, Falls the Shadow, Return of the Living Dad, The Face of the Enemy, Autumn Mist, The Mother Road, AUDIO: A Death in the Family) Lucie Miller loosely quoted the phrase, commenting "I don't think we're in Telford anymore" upon seeing the true location of Hulbert Logistics. (AUDIO: Human Resources)
When revealing to the Doctor, Yasmin Khan, Graham O'Brien and Ryan Sinclair his true identity by showing them, through the window of an aeroplane, his own house flying through the air, the Spy Master acknowledged that it was "very Wicked Witch of the West". (TV: Spyfall)
Behind the scenes
- The crossover video game LEGO Dimensions, which is not considered a valid source on this wiki, sees the main characters travel both to a world based on the 1939 film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, and to the Doctor Who Universe. The Wizard of Oz antagonist, the Wicked Witch of the West, is recruited by the game's main antagonist and makes a few other minor appearances later in the game. In another installment of the LEGO franchise, The Lego Batman Movie, versions of both the Wicked Witch and the Daleks were among the interdimensional villains recruited by the Joker to wreak havoc on Gotham City.
- DWA 47 humourously presented an image of a Doctor Who-themed The Wizard of Oz featuring Donna Noble as Dorothy, K9 as Toto, an animated scarecrow as the Scarecrow, the Catkind Thomas Kincade Brannigan as the Cowardly Lion, and a Cyberman as the Tin Man.
