Machine

In the common vernacular, a machine was a mechanical device that performed a function.

The First Doctor referred to his TARDIS as a machine. (TV: The Edge of Destruction) Winston Churchill referred to it as a "remarkable machine". (TV: Victory of the Daleks)

When the First Doctor and his companions first met the Daleks, they initially thought them to be a machine race before Barbara Wright deduced that their hosts' emotion was evident of their organic roots.
