- Sir Isaac Newton dies.
- Thomas Gainsborough is born. He will paint a portrait of Ace that by 1988 is hanging in Windsor Castle. (DW: Silver Nemesis) Scaroth will also acquire some of Gainsborough's paintings. (DW: City of Death)
- The Doctor appears to Reinette for the first time. (DW: The Girl in the Fireplace) The Doctor noted that August was not a very good month in this year.
