In a parallel universe, Surus was the name of a talking elephant who was featured in the Doctor's fictionalised story of Hannibal's journey through the Alps. Surus, along with the other fictional elements in the story, were created by the Doctor's Possibility Generator.
In the story, Surus and Hannibal threatened the Doctor in order to obtain his knowledge of the future of Hannibal's invasion and the Romans' plans. When the Doctor was made to see that he had been trapped in his fantasies by Quences's power plays, he led Hannibal's army out of the Possibility Generator and into the Panopticon where Surus destroyed Badger, ending Quences's schemes. Along with the others, Surus returned to the story, though the Doctor informed them that they would not survive the crossing of the Alps. (AUDIO: Auld Mortality)
