Wild West

The Wild West of North America was very different to how it was depicted in films and other fiction of the 21st century. Life in the frontier towns sprung up as European settlers spread across North America, and life for them was not as violent as was often portrayed. Each town had a sheriff to keep the peace and enforce the law. A similar role was that of the US Marshals, who were appointed at government level by the US Marshals Service. (PROSE: A History of Humankind)

The First Doctor visited the Wild West with Steven Taylor and Dodo Chaplet, landing in Tombstone, Arizona in 1881. The Doctor noted that Dodo was quick to adhere to Wild West clichés. (TV: The Gunfighters) The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral became the most famous shoot-out in the history of the Wild West.

The Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones visited Redwater in the American West. (PROSE: Peacemeaker)

The Eleventh Doctor visited the Wild West (PROSE: A History of Humankind) with Amy Pond and Rory Williams when they travelled to Mercy, Nevada in 1870. (TV: A Town Called Mercy)
