The baker's man was a bread delivery driver in the area around Devil's End.

Biography

When driving towards Devil's End, the baker's man encountered an earth tremor caused by Azal reducing in size and stopped his van, staggering away from the vehicle.

Just as the tremor subsided, the van suddenly exploded. The baker's man attracted the attention of the Brigadier when he arrived in his staff car, warning him of the danger, and they realised a heat barrier was blocking the road, having sprung up in the same place as the van. The Brigadier and his driver left to try to find another way into the village, via the south, leaving the baker's man behind at the scene. (TV: The Dæmons)

Behind the scenes

  • In Barry Letts's novelisation of the story, the baker's man is not left behind at the heat barrier but instead given a lift by the Brigadier and his driver — who is named as Manders — in the staff car to Lob's Crick, so he can phone his "Guv'nor".
  • The baker's man is described in the novelisation as being an "eighteen-year-old with spots and a brown overall" (quote, page 63) — quite unlike Gerald Taylor, who played the part on television and was thirty-one at the time.
