Lieutenant Beresford was the UNIT officer brought in to replace Mike Yates when he was promoted to Captain. (PROSE: The Face of the Enemy)
Biography
He was assigned by Brigadier to conduct surveillance on Minister Carswell. (PROSE: The Face of the Enemy)
Later, Beresford had been promoted to Major and was in charge of UNIT while Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was away in Geneva. He was summoned by Sir Colin Thackeray of the World Ecology Bureau (WEB) to deal with the threat of the Krynoid which had been Arnold Keeler.
On the Fourth Doctor's advice, Beresford called in an RAF aerial attack to bomb the Chase Mansion, destroying the Krynoid. (TV: The Seeds of Doom)
