Betelgeuse V, (PROSE: Lords of the Storm) often called just Betelgeuse, was a planet mentioned several times by the Fourth Doctor. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks, et al.)

Geography

Betelgeuse V used to have a moon, though it was later destroyed. (PROSE: Lords of the Storm) The Third Doctor remembered seeing a double sunrise on Betelgeuse. (PROSE: The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Time Traveller)

Culture

On Betelgeuse there was no sarcasm, and shame was a terminal disease.

In the language of Betelgeuse V, "Ix" translated to "boy who is not able satisfactorily to explain what a Hrung is, nor why it should choose to collapse on Betelgeuse Seven". This was used as a nickname for Ford Prefect, whose father would not tell him about his experience of the Great Collapsing Hrung Disaster of Gal./Sid./Year 03758.

History

In 4500, when Davros was revived and had demanded to know what had happened while he was in suspended animation, the Doctor told him that Betelgeuse had placed second in the Galactic Olympic Games, behind Arcturus (TV: Destiny of the Daleks) or Earth. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Destiny of the Daleks)

Undated events

The Seventh Doctor mentioned a visit to Betelgeuse while at the Grand Betelgeuse Hotel. (AUDIO: The Grand Betelgeuse Hotel)

One obscure Betelgeusian dialect, spoken mainly by Praxibetel communities on Betelgeuse VII, was nearly lost when those communities were wiped out by the Great Collapsing Hrung Disaster of Gal./Sid./Year 03758. The sole survivor settled on Betelgeuse V.

References

Jackie Tyler once referred to Betelgeuse as a planet to which the Ninth Doctor might travel. (AUDIO: Retail Therapy)

Neko compared Lady Christina de Souza's perfume to the smell of a "Betelgeusian bordello". (COMIC: The Eye of Ashaya)

Ian Chesterton also mentioned a star named Betelgeuse. (PROSE: Byzantium!)

A user of the socio-virtual network used the alias "Bright of Betelgeuse". (AUDIO: The Sentient)

Professor Chronotis owned a travel guide entitled Alternative Betelgeuse. (PROSE: Shada)

Behind the scenes

In non-valid sources

Betelgeuse V was the fifth planet around the star Betelgeuse, around 600 light-years from Earth. Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox were both from Betelguese Five. Green was the colour of the flying saucers used by Betelgeuse trading scouts. (NOTCOVERED: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
