Abner J. Endicott was a resident of Brideport in 1962, and a respected World War I veteran, having fought in France during the conflict, where he claimed to have crawled through the mud "with bodies piled ten-high" all around him, and that he thought he had gone to Hell.
He was befriended by the Thirteenth Doctor, and aided her in freeing Brideport Elementary School teacher, Edith Harcourt, from the influence of the Piggybacker, in which he used their mutual respect for each other to talk her into fighting back against the creature's control.
