Kenneth James Valentine was was born in Newport in the year 1921. From the age of 15, he worked as a carpenter until 1941, when he joined the Royal Dragoon Guards. As part of the Twenty Seventh Armoured Brigade he served during Operation Overlord, also known as D-Day, taking part in the Normandy landings on Sword Beach where he was injured.
