A hammer and sickle was a communist symbol. It resembled a crossed hammer and sickle typically in yellow on a red background.
It was the emblem of the Soviet Union (COMIC: Target Practice) and was present on their flag. (TV: Before the Flood)
Uses

Among the patches Ace wore on her black bomber jacket was a star-shaped patch with the Soviet hammer and sickle.
