Mari Yoshida was a woman who had been a companion of the Sixth Doctor in a dream. She met Sam Duffy at the fresher's fair and was a fan of the singer Tara. She had a grandmother who told her about the Tsukumogami, which are objects that come to life after a hundred years. She had many comic books about kitsune. She is incredibly intelligent and witty, likening the Eighth Doctor to 'edgy Sergeant Pepper' and 'Heathcliff' while dreaming.
Under the influence of the Kantrofarri, Mari and the Sixth Doctor dreamed that they traveled together in the TARDIS, going on adventures for long enough that Mari felt as though she hadn't seen her parents in ages. While dreaming of traveling on the TARDIS, Mari reported having bad dreams, so the Sixth Doctor took her to the Archipelago of High Dream to visit a monastery. The monks helped Mari fall asleep, where she met the Eighth Doctor. The Eighth Doctor told her that she was not at the High Dream and that her life was being drained away as she slept, trying to get her to wake up.
Mari woke up at the Lethe Foundation and met her sleep mentor, who was actually Sam, stuck in a dream just like Mari. While investigating, Mari found a slimy trail in the corridor of the Lethe Foundation and once again fell asleep. In her dream, the Eighth Doctor told her that he needs her to escape and remember him, and she woke back up on the ward with Sam and the Sixth Doctor. Mari and Sam both fell asleep again, and the Eighth Doctor told her that High Dream was real and that he was given a flask containing the Kantrofarri while visiting. Since Mari and Sam were thinking of the Kantrofarri, they attacked, but Sam saved them both due to his skills involving dreaming. The Eighth Doctor realized that Mari apparently travels with the Sixth Doctor, but given that he could not remember her, he knew something was wrong.
Mari woke up once more and saved the Sixth Doctor from baby Kantrofarri. The Sixth Doctor realized that they were still dreaming and that Mari didn't actually travel with him. Sam was able to wake all of them up, and Mari woke up for real this time in her room, no Doctor or TARDIS in sight. After waking up, Mari heard Sam knock on her door and remembered him from the fresher's fair. She prepared for a new adventure with Sam while the Sixth Doctor had woken up alone and companionless on the TARDIS (AUDIO: Together in Eclectic Dreams).
