The Cradle was a sentient spaceship. Left the last of its kind after a tragedy, it began gathering up children in danger inside itself to keep them safe, for eternity.

In 1978, it was drawn to Earth by Seema Ahluwalia's grief after the death of her father, after which she wanted to escape the planet altogether. The ship arrived in Southall, London, in December and drew Seema, Terrence, Inderjit Singh and Sam Button onboard, along with the Twelfth Doctor, who was investigating the situation. The Cradle was eventually persuaded by the group, and Jaya, who had been living onboard for a long time, to release them back to Earth and to change its approach to saving people.
