When Missy was shot at by a Cyberman, (TV: Death in Heaven) she used the energy of the blast to recharge her manipulator and escape. (TV: The Witch’s Familiar)
She did the same thing again when on Skaro and when shot at by Dalek control, (TV: The Magician's Apprentice) also using the blast energy to charge the manipulator she'd given to Clara Oswald to escape. (TV: The Witch's Familiar)
Using her vortex manipulator, Missy was able to break into the Tower of London to steal the British Crown Jewels. The Twelfth Doctor entered the room, barely missing the chance to stop her from again jumping into the Time Vortex. (PROSE: Dr. Twelfth)
At some point, the manipulator was damaged. Missy looked for another time traveller to see if she could find technology that could repair it. She discovered the Monk in Tudor England, and she stole a component from his TARDIS. (AUDIO: Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated)
