Greatcoat

A greatcoat was a type of overcoat, especially associated on Earth with the First and Second World Wars. Such coats were almost exclusively worn by men. They easily fit over even full dress uniforms. Typically made of a heavy fabric, such as wool, they extended down to the mid-calf, to provide warmth over almost the entire body. They were distinguished by this exceptional length, prominent pockets, substantial collars and large buttons. Typically, greatcoats also had a strip of cloth with decorative buttons on the back, at roughly waist level. This strap across the back naturally gathered the cloth across the back to provide a characteristic pleat.

Worn by the Doctor

The Eleventh Doctor wore an army green greatcoat when helping River Song in Berlin during 1938, (TV: Let's Kill Hitler) during a misadventure in the Two Streams Facility, (TV: The Girl Who Waited) and when escaping death. (TV: The Wedding of River Song) He also wore a black greatcoat when decoying Kahler-Tek for Kahler-Jex's escape him in Nevada during 1870. (TV: A Town Called Mercy)

The Second Doctor donned a greatcoat as a disguise to escape from the War Lord's central headquarters. (TV: The War Games)

The Eighth Doctor wore a greatcoat when dealing with Vortex Wraiths. (PROSE: The Slow Empire)

Worn by Companions

Jack Harkness's trademark garment was a navy blue RAF issue greatcoat; most notably when meeting the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler during the Blitz, (TV: The Empty Child|The Doctor Dances) when Gwen Cooper joins his team, (TV: Everything Changes) when helping to free Carys Fletcher from hormone gas, (TV: Day One [+]Loading...["Day One (TV story)"]) when dealing with the consequences of his team using a quantum transducer including Ed Morgan's suicide, (TV: Ghost Machine) before meeting a partially cyber-converted survivor of the Canary Wharf Battle, (TV: Cyberwoman) when dealing with fairies, (TV: Small Worlds) when confronting the cannibalistic Brynblaidd villagers, (TV: Countrycide) during Tosh's encounter with a renegade Arcateen posing as Mary since 1812, (TV: Greeks Bearing Gifts) when dealing with Suzie Costello, (TV: They Keep Killing Suzie) when solving Eugene Jones's murder, (TV: Random Shoes) when meeting Diane Holmes and her passengers, (TV: Out of Time) when foiling Mark Lynch's Weevil Fight Club, (TV: Combat) when defeating Abaddon, (TV: End of Days) when meeting the Tenth Doctor alongisde Martha Jones and Futurekind as well as Chantho and Professor Yana who is really the War Master, (TV: Utopia) during and after the Toclafane Invasion arranged by the Saxon Master, (TV: The Sound of Drums|Last of the Time Lords) when reuniting with John Hart, (TV: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) during his encounter with Tommy Brockless,(TV: To the Last Man) during his encounter with Dale and a mutant space whale known as the Cash Cow, (TV: Meat) when dealing with Adam Smith, (TV: Adam) when foiling Aaron Copley's experiment with mayflies, (TV: Reset) when hunting Nostrovites, (TV: Something Borrowed) when facing the Ghostmaker, (TV: From Out of the Rain) during Gray's vendetta, (TV: Exit Wounds) when helping to foil the New Dalek Empire including Davros and a Supreme Dalek, (TV: The Stolen Earth|Journey's End) when foiling the 456, (TV: Children of Earth: Day One-Children of Earth: Day Five) when dealing with the consequences of the Three Families causing Miracle Day, (TV: The New World-The Blood Line) when warning about Ashad, (TV: Fugitive of the Judoon) and when helping to defeat Death Squad Daleks, (TV: Revolution of the Daleks)

Worn by Others

An early incarnation of Iris Wildthyme once wore a greatcoat. (PROSE: Hospitality)

Behind the scenes

The Second Doctor names the object in The War Games. In Torchwood, it largely goes unnamed. However, it is the subject of puns, such as when Ianto Jones calls it a "great coat" after one of his initial encounters with Jack Harkness. (TV: Fragments)
