Claire Rayner served as an Agony Aunt on Petticoat, a magazine aimed at teenagers, in the 1960s. During that time, she received letters from a Susan Foreman of south London, who was missing her parents. Rayner wrote back to her twice, telling Susan that she must stand up to her grandfather, who Rayner believed owned a scrap yard in Tower Hamlets. Susan never received the reply as she had left in the TARDIS in November 1963 with her grandfather along with Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Following Susan's departure, Rayner stopped receiving letters but did receive a postcard from France dated 1794, saying that Susan had been taken away by her grandfather had taken her away and she that wanted either to go home to her parents or back to school. Rayner wrote back telling Susan that her grandfather had no legal right to take her out of full-time education, and she should ring the attendance officer herself if he would not listen to reason. From experience, Rayner believed that talking about such things, "bringing them out in the open", did "a world of good". (AUDIO: Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman?
