The Cold War was a BBC documentary on the making of Attack of the Cybermen and was produced by 2|entertain for its DVD release. It focused on the re-imagining Doctor Who for the new season, and consists of interviews with the crew.

Subjects Covered[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Establishing the Sixth Doctor
  • Changing the format from 25 minutes to 45 minutes and the return to the Saturday evening slot
  • Bringing the Cybermen together
  • The confusion of Paula Moore's true identity, including initially considering bringing back Gerry Davis and Ian Levine's claims to have written the story (which Eric Saward denied)
  • Linking the story to previous Cybermen stories, notably The Tomb of the Cybermen (then a missing story), Cybermen in the Thames (The Invasion), making the story a prequel to The Tenth Planet
  • Complications of the story's themes
  • Bring back the 76 Totter's Lane junkyard (last seen in An Unearthly Child) and Lytton (last seen in Resurrection of the Daleks)
  • Bringing back director Matthew Robinson, having previously worked on Resurrection of the Daleks
  • Casting the guest characters
  • Location filming for the story, including post-production editing on the Telos scenes to give the impression of an alien landscape
  • The creation of the Cryons, which were originally written as a male species but changed to female at the suggestion of Matthew Robinson
  • Studio filming of the story, which took place at BBC Television Centre
  • The story's criticisms for its violent content
  • The cast and crew's reflection of the story
