IndexThe Panopticon → Classic and New
Spoilers are strongly policed here.
If this thread's title doesn't specify it's spoilery, don't bring any up.

This is an idea I've had for a while which I think is particularly relevant now. Basically, I feel we could use a page which covers the divide between "Classic Who" and "New Who" and perhaps the "New New Who" as well. I see it as being like the page for canon in that it would collect references from official sources and authors. It could cover anything from the existence of separate classic and new series BBC websites, to Big Finish Productions' expansion to post-2005 content (as highlighted in Classic Doctors, New Monsters), their being listed as separate titles on platforms such as the new Whoniverse and even the "No classics? No 50th!!" gag from The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. MrThermomanPreacher 00:56, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Discussion[[edit source]]

I support this. I'd also like pages on RTD1 and RTD2, and just generally any other official "era" terminology. OS25🤙☎️ 01:50, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

I'm against this insofar as it applies to New Who until we resolve the issue of S14. That wrinkle is sort of an issue for the "New" terminology. Classic? Sure, there's no real debate on that except the TV movie. Najawin 02:14, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Well pages should discuss the intricate disagreements between eras. How the TV Movie is much more of a failed "New Who," etc. There's surely countless DWM articles to cite on the topic. Trying to find a definitive opinion on such topics is a fool's errand. OS25🤙☎️ 05:33, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

With the closure of Forum:2023 Naming Scheme Reset sorting out the S14 thing, might be worth looking at this again. I support this, specifically how OS25 suggested it should be written. I've looked for pages along these lines in the past to refer to and was surprised they didn't exist. - CodeAndGin | 🗨 | 19:27, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Going back to this, what would be the best name for this page? Should there be pages for each of the now three incarnations: 1963, 2005 and 2023? --MrThermomanPreacher 02:08, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

I'm a little confused about the proposed scope of the page or pages in question. Is this a terminology page on era demarcations generally?
If we're now discussing multiple pages, what does 2005 Doctor Who (or Doctor Who (2005); whichever) actually accomplish that can't be done by sections on Doctor Who? (Wasn't there also a proposal somewhere for a Doctor Who (TV series)?)
If we mean the former, maybe... Era (terminology)? Eras in Doctor Who?

Actually Classic Doctor Who, BBC Wales Doctor Who and Bad Wolf Doctor Who would be better page names (for the separate pages idea). Also way easier to implement links to those pages, since that phrasing is everywhere on the wiki.

And I do have one argument of my own in favour of giving those separate pages: SEO. Readers do search for these things, so this may help direct them here.
