Harrison Chase was an eccentric millionaire whose primary hobby was botany, having assembled the world's largest collection of plants. He disdained humanity in favor of plant life, even composing music for them.

Chase learned from Richard Dunbar that a Krynoid pod had been found in Antarctica. As a collector of rare specimens, Chase became obsessed with obtaining them, and sent Scorby and Arnold Keeler to steal it. He allowed the Krynoid to infect Keeler, who slowly transformed into Krynoid himself.
