Maximus Petullian was a famous lyre player in Corinth. He conspired to kill Emperor Nero and was assisted in this plot by Tavius. A centurion learned of Maximus' intentions and hired Ascaris to assassinate him, which he succeeded in doing. The Doctor discovered Maximus' body and lyre. When he was then discovered by the centurion, he claimed that he was Maximus, and was forced to continue the deception for the rest of his stay in Rome. (DW: The Romans)
