The proteus gland was a large gland used for shapeshifting in metamorphic species such as the Nostrovites. Though Nostrovies are believed to have taken the gland from another species (TW: Something Borrowed)

The proteus gland shares its name with Proteus, a shapeshifting Greek deity.
