Captain Henry Avery was a naval officer in the 1660s who eventually became a pirate seeking to increase his wealth. Three years following his departure from home, his ship The Fancy encountered the Siren who began taking the crew away. The Eleventh Doctor eventually revealed that the Siren was in fact a doctor, rather than a demon, and Avery eventually let himself be taken to her hospital in order to care for his son and crew. In the end, his crew (from the The Fancy) along with his son flew a new-age spaceship across the stars. (DW: The Curse of the Black Spot)

Henry Avery may have been, or may have been a relative of, pirate captain Avery in the episode The Smugglers (which was set in the same era) or the real Henry Avery/Every who likewise captained a ship called The Fancy in the 1660s and stole Mughal treasure. The real Captain Avery was believed to have retired safely, but his life after disapearing from record 1696 is unconfirmed.
