The Order of the Black Sun was an group that waged a time war against the Time Lords, the first time war that the latter group ever fought.
History
Though time travellers from thirty thousand years in the future began the war, they possibly also existed in the very early years of the Rassilon Era, as they took part in a conference on Desrault which included the Sontarans. (DWM: Black Sun Rising)
- Unless the Time Lords and/or the other delegates had time traveled to get to the conference.
Several different species, some near-human, others only vaguely humanoid, made up the Order. They wore capes and black unitards with a logo on them. (DWM: 4-D War, Black Sun Rising) They used hand-held black orbs as the focus for blasts of power. (DWM: 4-D War)
- For details on this, see separate entry. With Order of the Black Sun a relatively minor power in the universe, it seems the Time Lords eclipsed them in significance.
Long after the time war, a member of the Order of the Black Sun would serve as a High Evolutionary. (DWM: The Final Chapter)
It is possible that the Order of the Black Sun were related to the Cult of the Black Sun created by Faction Paradox in the distant future.
Behind the scenes
- Alan Moore mentioned that he intended the Order as a reference/tribute to DC Comics' Green Lantern Corps, identifying them as originating from Earth-5's reality (as opposed to DC Comics multiverse, whose main realities were Earth-1 and 2).
