The Tenza were a species of alien chameleons with powerful psychic abilities.

Biology

Life cycle

The Tenza had similar behaviour patterns to a cuckoo bird. Shortly after birth, they drifted in space, looking for the nearest habitable world and a family that wanted a child (but could not naturally achieve one). After locating such a family, the Tenza infant would adapt itself to perfectly suit its environment and alter the surrogate parents' memory and the memories of those around them to believe the child had always been a part of the family. After that the alien would live out its life as a member of that species, without conscious knowledge of their true nature.

Despite their ability to mimic another species perfectly they possessed certain odd "tics" that drew attention, especially when distressed. Alex mentioned some of these to the Doctor, saying that George blinked too much when he was frightened or stared off into space at odd times. However, should a Tenza be rejected by their surrogate parents, their telepathic abilities would play havoc with their environment. This was the case with George, a Tenza who had established himself as the child of Alex and Claire, who believed his parents wanted to get rid of him because they were struggling to help him cope with his phobias. This brought his phobias to life in a dollhouse that was governed by the Peg Dolls, who would terrorise him and abduct anyone who terrified him. (DW: Night Terrors). The matter was resolved when the Doctor was able to help George's father realise that, despite what George was, there was still a paternal bond between them.

Abilities

The Tenza posessed incredibly powerful psychic abilities but due to the nature of the race, individuals were not consciously aware of them. Their abilities worked on a subconscious level and increased in strength depending on the emotional state of the the Tenza.

A terrified George was able to reach out to the Doctor on the other side of several Galaxies.

The Tenza were able to create their own personal worlds in a small space. In George's case, this world took the form of storage space for his various fears. One such fear manifested it self in living psychic constructs of walking Peg Dolls that fed on the child's fears. While their very presence terrified George, they seemed to protect him in their own way; they abducted anyone who threatened/scared George or his surrogate family. They were temporarily stopped when George entered their world, but threatened him when he feared being taken from his parents. They stopped completely when Alex ran to defend George from them, proving to the child his fear of his parents sending him away was unfounded.
