Tales from the TARDIS was a regular feature of early issues of Doctor Who Weekly, which re-used adaptations of classic works of literary science fiction previously published by Marvel Comics in the US title Marvel Classics Comics. The UK branch of Marvel at that time published Doctor Who Weekly. The Weekly's editor, Dez Skinn, found the reprints a cost-effective alternative to the commission of original comics material.

The Tales ran from issues 1 through 29. This was followed by a series of short stories under the heading Dr Who's Time Tales.

The comics, originally presented as full-length stories, were broken up and presented by the Fourth Doctor, with the opening and closing frames of each chapter altered to include him.
