Television was a system that allowed people to view broadcast plays, news, drama and comedy. The Television Set was invented in 1925 by Scottish inventor John Logie Baird, who developed a system that utilised a Nipkow Disc and assorted mechanical parts. The device did not bear any relation to the Television Set of the second half of the 20th Century and the 21st Century (which was developed by various groups, including Marconi EMI in 1936).

By the early 1950s the sets were already highly developed, although advances would continue to be made. The Wire tried to regain a physical body by using an Alexandra Palace television transmission of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, but the Tenth Doctor managed to trap her in a video casette. (DW: The Idiot's Lantern)

In the far future, television was still a popular pastime,. Violent television was much more common than before in such places as the planet Varos and in the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire. (DW: Vengeance on Varos/Bad Wolf) Other human nations, such as the New Earth Republic, liked to watch shows from old Earth. (DW: Synthespians™)
