Museums were places where humans and many other species used to show objects of scientific, artistic or historical importance, available for public viewing through exhibits.
The Doctor liked to visit museums and look at the exhibits as a way of "keeping score". He was very critical of any errors with the artefacts or mislabelling. (DW: The Time of Angels)
