The Vashta Nerada were living shadows that melt the flesh. They are described as "piranhas of the air".
They were capable of latching onto another person's shadow and even entering into a space suit whereupon they devoured the body. The space suit was capable of being manipulated by the Vashta Nerada as a vessel through which they attacked more prey. (DW: Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead)
