Aberystwyth University

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Founded in 1872, Aberystwyth University (known as the University Of Wales, Aberystwyth until 2007) was the first university established in Wales in the town of Aberystwyth, in Cardigan Bay on the west coast.

The university hosted a talk entitled "Black holes and the Uncertainty Principle" (TW: Random Shoes).

Real World

The flyer advertising the talk states "N. Wales Astronomy Society Convention, Aberystwyth University, Science And Natural History Museum". In reality, there is no such museum.

Scenes set at the university were actually filmed in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, due to budget and time constraints.

For the past several years the annual 'Moving Image Festival of Wales', "Ffresh" has been held at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, located on the main university campus. While attending the 2007 festival, both Richard Stokes and Cath Tregenna gave a talk and Q&A session about their respective roles as producer and writer for Torchwood.

The Aberystwyth Arts Centre was also one of a few venues that held advanced screenings of Smith and Jones.

The Department of Film, Theatre & Television Studies at the university has strong links with BBC Wales, possibly a reason for it being chosen to 'appear' in Torchwood.
