- The last time a clown was an enemy was in the Doctor Who episode, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy
- Menacing clowns have also appeared in The Celestial Toymaker and The Deadly Assassin. There were also clowns among the Night Travellers (TW:From Out of the Rain).
- The title 'Day of the Clown' was learned when the Penguin Books website revealed the first two of their Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2 novelisations. The information has since been removed from their website.
- Maria will not feature in this episode, leaving in the previous story The Last Sontaran. The reason for this is that Yasmin Paige is in her GCSE year.
