CAIN was an artificial lifeform on the Myriad, with a fungoid brain. He could detect the presence of the Pyralis. His brain failed, the captain on the ship Suri locked him up as he was alive so couldn't deactivate him. Romana let him free and he ran through the ship. (AUDIO: The Pyralis Effect)
